Do Our Children Learn in Black and White or in Color Too?
My students need color and black ink to use in the HP printer donated to my classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
On the first day of 2nd grade, my students arrived in the classroom ready to write, edit and begin publishing their narratives, poetry, and informational texts, complete with illustrations and diagrams. I set up the color printer I had brought from home, but had no ink to contribute.
My second grade students come from a beautiful community of families who are primarily Latino.
19 of the students speak Spanish at home. One speaks Arabic; one speaks Hindu. These English language learners need extra support in the form of images and realia in their learning so that they can integrate academic vocabulary and material in a more concrete and accessible way. 65 % of our students receive school lunches and therefore face economic challenges and are often not able to access the Internet and other educational resources at home. They are fabulous--they want to learn; they try their best; they create, but we need ways for them to be able to produce work that feels exciting, alive and engaging.
Our school offers "guided language acquisition design" strategies to support our students' learning with supplemental materials created by teachers. To do it well, I need to not just bring it in black and white, but in living color--the way we really see and learn in the world.
My Project
With color and black ink for our classroom printer, I will be able to produce materials that will engage the students. I will be able to print images of animals for our life cycles unit. For our government unit, I will be able to print a picture of our Supreme Court Chief Justices that will show diversity in color. I will be able to create a "Big Book" on producers and consumers for our economics unit. Trees will be green. Fruit will be red. My students will be able to print images they find on the Internet for their research projects in our heroes unit. They will be able to write, illustrate and publish stories, poetry, opinion pieces and informational text that will engage their classmates in their own learning while being able to support each other. They will make and read books in color as they should be read.
Access to color and black ink for the printer will allow the students to actively engage in their educational experience.
The supplemental materials we will be able to create and provide in the classroom will enrich and solidify their learning. They will also be able to take a more active part in their experience by being able to create books, materials and other writing themselves.
