My second grade students come from a beautiful community of families who are primarily Latino. 19 of the students speak Spanish at home. One speaks Arabic; one speaks Hindu. These English language learners need extra support in the form of images and realia in their learning so that they can integrate academic vocabulary and material in a more concrete and accessible way. 65 % of our students receive school lunches and therefore face economic challenges and are often not able to access the Internet and other educational resources at home. They are fabulous--they want to learn; they try their best; they create, but we need ways for them to be able to produce work that feels exciting, alive and engaging. Our school offers "guided language acquisition design" strategies to support our students' learning with supplemental materials created by teachers. To do it well, I need to not just bring it in black and white, but in living color--the way we really see and learn in the world.
