Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The books chosen for our book study "Peace, Locomotion" and "Brown Girl Dreaming" focus on children whose lives have been less than perfect. Through writing, our characters are able to rebuild their relationships and learn to love themselves. Reading about these experiences, and seeing how characters were able to cope with their trauma and otherness, will help students overcome any feelings of sadness and loneliness they are going through and any bullying they have faced. The characters in these books will also teach students how to avoid conflict and work with other people who look and act different than themselves.

These books will show students that although some kids may be smiling on the outside, they may be hurting on the inside and need our compassion.

Before our book study, students will write about what compassion and empathy means to them. After our book study, we will return to the idea of compassion and empathy. Students will define compassion in their own words, and provide examples on how we can show compassion to others. We will close the unit by creating posters for our campus.

These posters will be little reminders that:

-every student matters

-tell students how to seek help on our campus if they are going through an emotional crisis or feeling sad

- offer different ways to cope with problems they may face inside of school and outside of school (such as online bullying)

-offer suggestions on how to avoid physical conflict

Students will also write a persuasive essay that recommends ways in which our campus can help students in need. Their recommendations will be given to our campus leadership team and our school social worker.

I hope these books inspire my students to advocate for others who are hurting and in need. Thank you.
