Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am in my second year as a first grade teacher in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood, and one of my main focuses this year is student writing. A colleague and I have joined a professional development group, where student writing is the main topic for discussion. The purpose of this grant is to acquire materials that will foster our students' writing abilities.
For this proposal, I seek books that will serve as models of the concepts we are teaching. There is also a teacher's resource book that will help us improve our instruction, and there is a centers organizational chart to help the students stay on task while we are working on our writing.
As first grade teachers, we have our work cut out for us in the area of writing. It can be very daunting to look at what we must accomplish over the course of 180 days. Students enter barely knowing their letters and sounds, and by the end of the year they are expected to write full paragraphs in various genres, including personal narrative and expository. The students move from simple one-sentence journal writing to animal reports and fictional stories that include an introduction, a main body paragraph, and a conclusion. They progress from being dependent on the teachers to working independently.
At least, all of this is the expectation and the hope.
The specific skills mentioned above can be further developed with the materials that I seek. The resources will be shared with my colleague and will reach forty students, not to mention the students in our classes for years to come. Thank you for your help in transforming our students into authors!
