This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Try teaching Concepts of Print using small books where the punctuation marks are so tiny you practically have to place the book in front of every child's face in order for them to see it.
I am teacher in an inner city district.
Our school provides free breakfast and lunch to all students. In addition, our students also receive a nutritious snack daily. In my classroom there are wonderful boys and girls who love listening to stories and participating during reading.
My Project
I have to teach my students Concepts of Print; where to begin writing or reading, reading from left to right, where to go after the end of the line (return sweep), word by word pointing (one-to-one correspondence, concept of a letter, word and sentence, there are first and last letters in words, upper and lower case letters have purpose, different punctuation marks have meaning, etc.
My students are very involved during reading and they use a hand pointer to identify concepts of print. The problem is that our books are small and it is difficult for them to identify punctuation, letters, words, etc. because they have a difficult time seeing print so small. These outstanding theme packets present literature-based learning on a grand scale!
By funding this project you will help my students learn concepts of print using the beautiful big books.
Developing concepts about print in children at an early age is invaluable to their literacy development. Without a firm grasp on these concepts, children will have trouble learning to read and write. These concepts about text give children the tools they need to read and to write by themselves.
