Help me give my students the opportunity to trace their ancestral path and see the connection between themselves and their classmates through the data obtained through Sanger DNA sequencing.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from 51 different countries and speak many different languages. Our school focuses on creating a meaningful, academic environment for students with diverse backgrounds and academics needs. Students strive to learn while adapting to a new country and language. We meet the academic needs of English Language Learners; students with interrupted education; and students with learning disabilities through collaborative and project-based activities.
Project-based learning and portfolio presentations throughout the academic year has allowed our students to demonstrate their learning in various ways, and develop skills that gives them the encouragement they need to continue to pursue their goals.
My Project
In this project, students will collect, purify, and amplify (making more copies of) their own DNA. Supporting this project will allow students to send their amplified DNA to sequence it. Students will then analyze the sequence to determine their maternal ancestry and see how they are related to their classmates.
This project has become one the most engaging projects I have been able to do with my students do to the information and connections they are able to make with one another even though they come from very different cultural backgrounds.
Not only do they learn about cell biology, but they also learn to use biotechnology techniques to reveal insights about their maternal ancestors.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
