My Students
My Students: Our high school students will be the next generation of students who make discoveries in molecular biology such as finding genes that cause different genetic diseases and conditions. Be someone who inspired a high school student to become interested in DNA and molecular biology!
I teach at a large public high school in Orange County CA.
We are very diverse with students of different socioeconomic status from various ethnic groups. My biology classroom instruction has been hampered by an extremely limited budget which has reduced the number of labs and hands-on activities for my students. I know that in order for them to comprehend many of the abstract concepts in biology they need to engage in a student-centered activity.
My Project
My Project: I have attended workshops and used DNA models supplied by Carolina Biological Supply. These are manipulative models that students construct using the sugars, phosphates, and nitrogenous bases, the major components of DNA. All of the pieces come apart and are durable and flexible, designed for years of student use. By building DNA models my students will gain a clear understanding of the structure and function of DNA and its importance in living things.
A donation towards this project will help contribute to our next generation of students in their understanding of DNA and molecular biology.
California has always been a forerunner in scientific research and for the first time in its history we may be struggling to produce quality students in the future due to severe budget cuts across our schools. Please help me inspire my students in this cutting-edge area of biology and get our students engaged in science once again. Thank you!
