DNA: Help Us Use Biotechnology!

My students need a vortex machine and a pipette to work with DNA to meet A.P. Biology standards and get ready for college and work.

My Students

Biotechnology is a rapidly growing field in biology. My students need to leave A.P. Biology being able to work with DNA. I have some equipment, all supplied through grants and I have just received a thermal cycler, but I do not have the all the supporting equipment that is used with it.

My students are a varied group.

We have had some awesome science students recently with several more coming up. We need to continue to support their growth and competitiveness in the future job market. Many of my students want to push themselves as much as they can now to succeed in college after they graduate. We have had many students with high ambitions and our school wants to help them to succeed. Some of my former students have PhDs, a few are doctors, and one is a marine biologist who trains dolphins. Our school has a mixture of rural and suburban students. We have students from many backgrounds. Over 50% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Increasing poverty and a changing job market are challenges for my students. I have witnessed several inspiring students who have been fighting to break out of the status quo and build a better future for themselves. I want to be able to do what I can to help them.

My Project

I have received a thermal cycler through a grant from a local university, however, I do not have enough supporting equipment to effectively use it. This device allows us to conduct polymerase chain reaction. This procedure has become the basis for many real world labs. To fully equip us, I am requesting a vortex mixer and a 20-200 microliter pipette. To carry out the reactions, thorough mixing is a must. The chemical amounts are minuscule, so stirring is not an option. Without a vortex mixer, students would have to tap DNA tubes for 5 to 10 minutes every time a mixture is made. We would quickly run out of lab time. Also, the vortex mixer is the same tool used by a real lab in doing these procedures. Since the chemical amounts are minuscule, tools that measure in this range are required. I do not have enough micropipettes for student practice. Student ability to use current lab measuring devices is important. I have enough to demonstrate how the micropipettes work only.

Biotechnology is changing our world, quickly.

My students must be able to work with these tools. The lab activities that my students can do with these tools will be real world problems using their own DNA or DNA collected from the environment. Polymerase chain reaction, the lab technique they will be learning with these tools, was considered Noble Prize winning work in the 80s, but has now found diverse applications, from solving crimes to searching for endangered aquatic salamanders.
