My Students
My students check out if I start lecturing about what DNA does. Beyond that they are very diverse in their needs and so finding activities that engage all students is a giant challenge.
My students are diverse.
Thay all live in an urban environment and are high school freshman. However, that is where there similarities stop. They run the spectrum of ethnic, socio-economic and academic backgrounds. It is the modern classroom in California cities.
My Project
With DNA Dreidels my students are able to make with their own hands-on tool they will use to learn about the central dogma of biology. They get so excited when they are making their dreidels, and it is an assignment they all can accomplish. But the dreidel is not the end goal. Rather they use it to transcribe and translate the DNA sequence they determine with their dreidel. The fact that this task is active, hands-on and personal leads to a almost 100% success rate in all aspects of the assignment.
Students often struggle in the sciences due to boredom and perceived obstacles.
