DNA Comparison in the Classroom

Help me give my students professional biotech equipment, including microliter accurate pipettes, DNA restriction enzymes, the chemicals to run our gel electrophoresis tanks, and the living organisms that connect macro and microscale biology.

My Students

Located in the heart of an amazing Southeast Asian immigrant community, this neighborhood school has a significant number of English Language Learners. That means biology students are expected to learn English the same time they are learning the concepts and vocabulary of science. In addition to overcoming linguistic challenges, Furness is a Title I school where 100% of students receive a free or reduced lunch. Many of our students deal with struggles beyond those of classroom demands and the hardships of being teenagers. The initial deployment of this activity is for ninety students. However, the materials requested could serve that many students each year for five years, supporting a total of 450 young people with an estimated 67 students (15%) receiving services through an IEP.

My Project

Students often think of science as a mysterious and exclusive process practiced only by geniuses with million dollar labs. By training students in the skills of professional microbiologists, it allows for a greater sense of confidence in their ability to "do" science. In addition to its professionalizing aims, these materials were specifically chosen to support success on our state exam, the Pennsylvania Biology Keystones. By isolating DNA, using restriction enzymes to digest it into smaller fragments, and analyzing the results on gel electrophoresis, we can give students a hands-on experience relating DNA and genes to organism function [BIO.B.1.2.2], enzyme activity in biological systems [BIO.A.2.3.1], and how DNA acts as a universal genetic code [BIO.B.3.2.1].

For students who are still developing their ability to express themselves in English, performing successful hands-on labs in a collaborative environment gives them an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding while increasing their need to use scientific language in context.

Not only does this project expose students to biological skills and content information, it supports NGSS science and engineering practices found across all disciplines, including planning and carrying out investigations, as well as analyzing and interpreting data.
