Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The student population at my school all have special needs and have diagnosis ranging from autism spectrum disorder to learning, emotional, and psychological disabilities. To better support their learning needs we strive to adjust and differentiate instruction to create an encouraging, positive, and supportive learning community. Many of my students come to me with little to no experience in music, and because of this traditional music notation is entirely foreign to them. I've found that this also discourages many students to attempt learning to read music in order to play instruments such as piano and guitar. I've approached this issue with color coding notes and chords and we slowly move into the music theory aspect of music making once they are ready.

My goal is to enrich and challenge students musically and mentally, and give them new opportunities to make music as an ensemble and encourage team building.

Something that every single one of the students comes in with although, is rhythm. Rhythm is so universal and is another way to differentiate instruction in the classroom. Drumming and improvising offer opportunities to modify instruction, learn playing techniques, and at the same time learn rhythmic notation. This spring I also started a unit on music from around the world and we highlighted instruments from West Africa, specifically the Djembe and ties in perfectly to learning new cultures and traditions.

Drumming has a positive effect on anxiety, grief, fatigue, depression and behavioral issues. Drumming can strengthen their ability to focus and work on impulse control and offers students another creative outlet. Thank you so much for visiting our page.
