I am a general music teacher for students in grades K to 8 at two elementary schools. The schools are located in urban Illinois. Students in the primary grades listen to music, describe music, sing, move to music, and play classroom instruments. With those instruments, students perform activities based on a combination of speech, movement, and music. I am starting to build a collection of world percussion instruments for students to use during music activities.
With this proposal, I intend to obtain 2 child sized djembes, which will be used by students in grades K-8. The instruments will be shared between the 2 schools. Djembes are conical drums played with the bare hands that originated in west Africa. There are three basic tones that are played on the djembe, and the instruments are typically played in percussion ensembles.
In my classroom, I intend to add the djembes to my existing collection of small percussion instruments. Through teacher and student led ensemble activities, students will learn about musical concepts such as tempo, instrumentation, dynamics, rhythm, and repetition. Students will compose and improvise. Your donation will allow students to learn about these musical concepts through hands on participation in a percussion ensemble. Students will play both composed music as well as improvised music.
