I am a general music teacher for students in grades K to 8 at 2 elementary schools in urban Illinois. One of the schools is a magnet school, and one of the schools is an International Baccalaureate School. Students in the primary grades listen to music, describe music, sing, move to music, and play classroom instruments such as tambourines, triangles, keyboards, and maracas. With those instruments, students perform activities based on a combination of speech, movement, and music. Neither school has large percussion instruments for students to play during music activities.
With this proposal I intend to obtain 2 child sized djembes, which will be used by students in grades K-8. The instruments will be shared between the 2 schools I work at. Djembes are conical drums that are played with the bare hands. Djembes originated in west Africa. There are three basic tones that are played on the djembe, and the instruments are typically played in percussion ensembles.
In my classroom I intend to add the djembes to my existing collection of small percussion instruments. Through teacher and student led ensemble activities, students will learn about musical concepts such as tempo, instrumentation, dynamics, rhythm, and repetition. Your donation will allow students to learn about these musical concepts through hands on participation in a percussion ensemble. Students will play both composed music as well as improvised music.
