My Project
As another school year begins, my 3rd graders start off nervous and full of big feelings. Sometimes the emotions get bottled up and they don’t know how to let them out. Making their own sensory bottles helps. Once they make them, they will keep them in the classroom to use when they feel too overwhelmed to work. In studies by social workers, they have found that students calm down quicker when they have something to look at that isn’t overstimulating.
Making their own sensory bottles using clear glue, water and some sparkles and beads, gives them an outlet for these big emotions.
Another project will be to make sensory boards. Student will fill small baggies with white glue and black paint. They will then color the back of a cardboard frame. When the baggie goes over their drawing they can use a cotton swab to draw designs to calm down.
These little projects help younger kids find healthy ways to deal with feelings of frustration, anger, sadness and so many other big emotions Being able to self-regulate in the classroom keeps kids in the classroom so they are easily able to return to work when they are ready. It helps those who are ready to learn, continue learning because the student with the big feelings can remove themselves from the group and quietly mange their emotions in another part of the class.
