DIY Robot Mats for Coding

My Students

My students are so excited to start getting hands-on STEAM experiences in our new Innovation Lab. We will delve into 3D printing, robotics, and programming, as well as many other hands-on projects. It is so fun to watch their faces light up when they see the results of their own creations.

The students are curious and creative, imaginative and innovative.

I love hearing their new ideas. We are a diverse school with many cultures and languages, and STEAM experiences are great at bringing everyone together for a common goal.

My Project

Using robots is a great way to introduce coding to the students. My students have progressed in their challenges to the stage where they can handle more advanced concepts. These activities require 5' x 8' mats that have 12 inch square grids to set up the challenges. Purchasing actual robot mats from most vendors is beyond our budget. However, the students found instructions to make our own mats using vinyl tablecloths, sharpies and a projector.

Your donations to this project will not only help my students further their love of coding and robots, but will also foster their perseverance and encourage their "thinking outside the box" approach to finding a solution to the limited budget.

The students will take an active part in drawing the grids on the mats, thereby also learning important math and measurement skills. Being vinyl, the tablecloths will be re-usable and can fold up to be stored.
