This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic kids with a love of learning. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless. My parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!
My students worry about starting school (and staying safe); and yet, they still want to come to school to explore, learn and grow.
I am trying to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science and social studies.
My Project
Our families have very little "extra" money to afford the luxury of art materials. Paint, paper, craft sticks and wiggly eyes are not a basic necessity when you are trying to put food on the table and keep a roof over your head. But, art is so much more.
Art is creative, problem-solving, therapeutic and helps with communication.
It is a luxury that we all should be given. Art is open-ended and free flowing. It is interpretive. Please help me to use art as a way of inspiring my students to be creative. Art will help my students to share what they are feeling. Paint sticks and watercolor paper will provide my students with a means of sharing their imagination and their thoughts. Students can be vivid and expressive with the right tools. Art helps with the fine motor skills, as well. In addition, craft sticks will help my children to build with 3-dimensional materials to create anything their minds can think up. Art is a means to express pride and accomplishment.
Art is a means of communication and therapeutic for everyone. By funding this grant, you are providing my students with the materials they would not normally have, and helping their well-being during this strange and confusing time. Thank you for considering my grant for your donation.
