Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a transfer high school. This means that we accept students who, for a myriad of reasons, were not successful in their previous school(s). Many of our students are looking for a second chance at their own education. 70% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch and nearly all of our students are students of color who travel from across the city to a different neighborhood in order to attend school. While some of our students are 20- and 21-years-old, some of our students are coming to us directly from middle school, where they have been labeled “over-aged and under-credited” and “at risk" for not completing high school.

Starting over in mixed grade leveled classes requires a strong community where students' basic needs (safety and the feeling of being seen) are met before they can begin learning.

My Project

Self-care needn't be expensive. My co-advisor and I have noticed that our students sometimes associate, or conflate, the idea of self-care with high costs. As a result, this care seems out-of-reach, and in some cases, can be replaced with risky and lower-cost options. We hope to offer our students an opportunity to learn and develop their own healthy, cost-effective, self-care methods that are sustainable and contribute to their overall well-being as individuals and as a community.

Coupled with our observation that students misunderstand self-care to equal or require an inaccessible financial expenditure, we also observe our students navigating adolescence without as full attention to their hygiene as is possible.

As a result, we've identified our time in Crew (Advisory) as an opportunity to not only practice mindfulness and meditation, catch up on missed assignments, explore and plan for post-secondary pathways, but as a chance to explore basic and essential elements of skin chemistry and self-care through DIY mixtures - making body soaps, facial washes, toners, and scrubs. In addition to attending to their individual needs in this way, we also hope to build a community through preparing and enjoying simple, healthy meals that are affordable for them to re-create at home.
