This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our high school Digital Arts Fab Lab is a converted music classroom, so we take inspiration from the space as we engage students with design and digital fabrication projects to foster an engineering mindset. So we're going to make a lot of stickers. What should we stick them on?

With these materials, students will create portable homemade percussion instruments (aka "bucket drums") using 5-gallon buckets – with waist straps made from nylon webbing straps with D-rings, slide adjusters, and carabiners that clip into duct-tape loops (which also enable percussion add-ons).

These blank white buckets will then become the canvas for students' vinyl stickers and decals they design and print during our vector unit. If we go absolutely nuts, we will light up the buckets with LEDs, for a little more

What else? Sometimes, in America, the youth need a lot of drums. Students will use these drums (and other DIY instruments) to record samples in our digital music unit, which covers audio concepts beat-making and audio engineering, including effects and mixing.

We will keep these drums in our inventory management system, which students use to check out and return school equipment. This system exposes them to opportunities to understand the importance of data structures in a living and consequential catalog.

For performing arts and mechanical engineering crossovers, our brigade of students with bucket drums will pair nicely with the mobile DJ scraper tricycle that students are building in the same Digital Arts class. Can you hear the noise we're about to make?
