My Students
The school I teach at has a little under 900 students. Slowly our enrollment has been dropping (in the past few years) causing our school to receive less funding. We send out monthly newsletters and flyers of upcoming events but our parent and student participation in nightly events has also been decreasing.
When my students enter my classroom, majority of them are reading below grade level (some two levels behind!) Many of them also lack basic math skills.
Some students do not receive support at home and wish they could stay longer in the classroom. They do not have a lot of confidence in their abilities or what they are capable of. They need exposure to resources they are unable to receive at home. I love knowing I have impacted their lives as they impacted mine.
My Project
All students will need 21st Century skills to survive and obtain a career in the future. With the new Next Generation standards being fully implemented in a couple of years, my students will have to incorporate engineering into their projects. S.T.E.M. is becoming more dominant in schools and being embedded in curriculum.
My class currently lacks the resources needed to provide them with opportunities to be creative and build structures.
All supplies will be used to invent and build structures. The brain flakes and interlocking builder blocks will be used by linking to each other. My students will be able to see how linking benefits structures. The velcro will be attached to the craft sticks to display another method of building. Students will be able to attach the ends of the crafts sticks to create a variety of structures. The cups, clothespins and craft sticks will enable students to construct various forms. Some activities can include building the largest tower, a bridge, a structure that can hold so many pounds, or a structure that has a good foundation/base. The supplies requested will give my students opportunities to analyze and improve their inventions. It provides hands-on learning and encourages the use of various materials they may not have at home.
