This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Over my 13 years teaching third grade, I have seen time and again that nonfiction texts are a struggle for my students. Out of many reasons, the one that stands out is the lack of background knowledge.
My students struggle to comprehend texts on topics they have never been introduced to before; that’s where Scholastic Magazines come in!
When I compare the years where I have been able to buy a subscription for my class compared to the years I have not, I see a huge difference. Not only do the glossy photos and interesting, worldly topics draw them in, but their vocabulary is being built with every page. More so, I have learned that just practicing reading articles on topics with which they are not familiar, increased their ability to tackle texts on new subjects. This magazine subscription would be a great benefit to my students.
