Diving Into Reading Comprehension

Help me give my students another medium to read and to meet the core standards for current events. They love Scholastic News. Language quickies for helping my struggling students with skills for comprehension and learning to dissect nonfiction.

My Students

I teach 3rd grade in a suburban community. I love teaching in this area. My students are positive and happy. We celebrate inclusion in our classroom. We have ELL students, autistic students, resource students and high achiever students. We are working together to have a community of learners.

I am excited for growth in our literacy program this year.

We are reading all different kinds of genres this year. I am trying to have a literacy rich classroom with new and different mediums for them to read.

My Project

I think sharing another medium of reading is a very powerful tool for students to connect with. I also love the technology component of Scholastic News. Sharing current events that they can relate to and understand is invaluable. It also supports our core curriculum. It also lends itself to whole group instruction, small group instruction, and ELL instruction.

Reading comprehension is a skill we are always working on in our learning community.

These quick reading comprehension kits will be just another way to enforce this skill. They are quick and can be administered by teacher, an aide, or parent volunteer in my classroom.
