This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My tech wizards, as I like to call my lovely sixth graders, come to school having already given up their educational careers; some, because they have experienced little success in their schooling, others, because of the baggage they bring from home which blinds them from the possibilities offered through education. Unfortunately, most of my students come from a high-poverty community with broken homes and little access to enriching experiences.
However, my sixth graders quickly learn that this reality does not define their identity.
They walk into my classroom feeling like they are home. They are welcomed. They are loved. With a classroom library boasting some of today's up and coming authors, and a reading nook complete with emoji pillows, a rug, and lamp, reading becomes fun and engaging once again for students who would have otherwise given up on picking up a novel for pleasure!
My Project
Wonder offers students a chance to find the wonder in reading once again! Many of my sixth graders enter sixth grade already having given up in math and reading. They simply have lost the joy in learning.
By offering an opportunity for students to dive deeply into a piece of literature, students will walk away with a renewed love for reading thanks to Auggie's compelling storytelling!
Reading Wonder will provide my students with rich learning experiences on topics such as students with special needs, bullying, family, and perseverance. Will you partner with us in making Wonder a reality in our classroom?
