My students need 30 subscriptions to Weekly Readers to engage them in reading and allow them to have more experience in other content areas such as science and social studies, and a class set of calculators.
I know you can remember how hard it was to stay focused in class when the teacher was in front teaching the same old boring stuff that you did not want to learn about! Well with the Weekly Reader subscription, students are allowed to step into a whole different realm and learn something new!
My students are kind and respectful.
They are very inquisitive and are anxious to learn about science and social studies. In our school, concentration is focused more on reading and math, but I wanted to find a way to integrate these with more interesting material. 95% of the students live in low income housing and lack experiences that other kids in the county may have. But they are still expected to learn the same material and master the same goals. They deserve the best no matter what there background may be. For some of these students, school is the best time of the day.
My Project
By having access to these resources in class, my students will be able to travel around the world and dive deep into the ocean all at their fingertips. They will learn that reading does not have to be boring and there is a whole world of things out there to learn about. By having access to calculators in class, these students will be able to learn that technology is a great benefit to everyday life. They will have a better understanding of concepts we learn. Also, they will be more actively engaged by having a hands on tool they can use.
This donation will mean so much in a small way.
Our students will greatly appreciate the ability to read about science and explore social studies in a whole new way. They will love the fact that they are learning without even opening a textbook. Having a calculator will teach these students necessary skills that will be very beneficial in life as they grow older and try to overcome the obstacles they face daily by living in poverty and living in an area where education is not a main concern.
