Everyday I am amazed by my students. The progress they have made this year is truly impressive, despite the challenges they face in and out of school. With our school’s Moral Focus curriculum, and my determination to close the achievement gap, they have learned to believe in themselves enough to take initiative with their learning. Every day it is hard, and each day we see growth. I have readers that range from a first grade to a fifth grade level in my sixth grade class. I am looking into providing my students with a text rich classroom that encourages them to read, grow, and progress.
Our school hosts students from over thirty countries and I have six languages represented in my class.
While our school is Title I school, my kids come in with positive attitudes determined to create a better future for themselves. This is a crucial year in their lives for personal and academic growth. My students and I are ready to take on the challenge.
I have a wide range of learners in my classroom, so choosing text has to be strategic. There is nothing better than diving into a new book and getting lost in the setting and characters. My students come from humble backgrounds and rely on school and their teachers to supply them with the resources and books they need. I strive to fill my shelves with books that get them excited to learn and from which they can grow.
My school's strength is their diversity, six different languages are represented in my classroom!
Picture books are a great way to teach new skills. I love introducing topics such as theme, inferencing, foreshadowing and many more through picture books. These short and beautifully illustrated books help me to scaffold my teachings and allow english language learners to thrive and participate in our discussions.
My students have gone from struggling to finish one book in the beginning of the year to reading over 6,000 pages in our March Madness Reading Competition! To keep this momentum going, I need books with characters my students can aspire to.
