Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This Donors Choose project is written for the fabulous 5th graders at Russo/ McEntee Academy! This year we have a hard working, and imaginative bunch of students. They are very inquisitive and have grand ideas!
Our students need to be challenged with Science activities!
With the Next Generation Science Standards now being used in California, we need to do more with Science overall. Hands- on experiments and dissections are always a fun way to learn. Students will be able to experience what it really feels like to make a hypothesis and experiment to find conclusions. These classes are very much into hands- on learning and being able to conduct these experiments will help prepare them for the Standardized test for Science that is required to be taken by all 5th graders.
Even though we live in the Silicon Valley, our students do not have access to innovative technology often. Our school is on the east side of San Jose, we are a Title I school and all students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are a located in a working class community and many of our students come from a lower socioeconomic status.
My Project
Students will have an opportunity to experience an actual dissection of an Owl Pellet with a partner! All of the materials from the dissection kits, owl pellets and the Teacher flip chart can be used in the many years to come as well! This will be something that our students will remember for the rest of their lives. We will follow the whole process of the Scientific Method! Each student will keep a notebook and copious notes of their findings. We will have researched and truly become experts in the area of life science before moving forward with the experiment so this will be the final step in the learning process. A hands- on approach to learning is always meaningful and memorable.
