This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Collaboration can often be the key to success but sometimes to divide and conquer is to really succeed!

Collaboration is the key to helping much of our school succeed.

We have a strong sense of community. The administration, staff, families, and surrounding community all work together increase the quality of life and education for our youth. My school is located in a low-income neighborhood of Manhattan where 99% of our students qualify for either free or reduced price lunches. Unable to afford "needs," resources that are simply "wants" are often disregarded.

My Project

Being such a collaborative community, my students are used to partnerships and teamwork. These materials will assist in promoting independence which is also an important quality to have. Student partitions will allow for privacy within a large class of 27 fifth graders. When we take tests, read, and do our writing workshop it can be difficult to ignore the distractions around us. These will assist in improving focus. Seat sacks will encourage students to organize their own materials in an independent and more responsible manner. Last, having a class set of dry erase markers and erasers will provide students with an opportunity to work independently at a task without interrupting each other to borrow materials.

While it may take a community to succeed in many situations, it also takes a great sense of independence.

With these materials, students will begin to foster this independence and learn to persevere to succeed on their own!
