Help me give my students a diverse classroom library. These books will complement our current selection with even more diversity including new people, places, and subjects.
This school year, my group of first-grade students are ages 6 and 7. These students live in an area of southwest Florida that is often lacking empathy for the diverse populations who live here. My classroom demographic is made up of diverse ethnicity and economic status. The students I teach speak many languages and come from many different places. By promoting different types of learning, including visual learning, these students will shine. I want to offer as many different types of learning to help my students succeed.
I want my students to have opportunities that promote learning and success.
My Project
In this project, there is a variety of books with diverse characters, authors, and subjects. There are also books including STEM-related topics and multi-cultural readings from all over the world. From a previous project including books, my students have enjoyed reading about the diversity about women, civil rights, and immigrants. We created a list of classroom book suggestions my students would like to read. I have spent time researching and speaking with other teachers about the books they have included in their classroom collections and have added some of those as well. As our library continues to grow I would like to add more books to match the students in the class.
