My Students

My students are in an urban district where the need level is quite high. Materials to use at home are limited as parents have lost jobs and money is extremely tight. My students need these multicultural diverse materials to help them create themselves, the world around them whether it be their family, community or people who have fought for justice from our social studies unit. They need to be able to express themselves appropriately with colors that are representative of the world we live in. My students will be able to learn with materials that are their own and remote learning won't be hindered because they do not have the materials that they need to create themselves, their families and their environment.

My Project

These multicultural sets of crayons, markers, and colored pencils will enable my students to express themselves, their families, and the world around them. Have you ever witnessed a child trying to match a crayon to their skin and saying that they can't draw themselves because there isn't a color in the crayon box that is "their" color? I have and its high time that these materials are available for all students to use and create with. We have a diverse community in my classroom which will thrive with these materials. The sense of pride and ownership that with results from these markers, colored pencils, and crayons will be astounding. They will allow each and every student to take pride in themselves and the community that they live and go to school in. And isn't that what we want for students? After all, they are our future and they need these "building blocks" to help them grow.
