My Students

My twenty-something elementary students are curious and energetic. That is what is needed for a successful classroom! Some are shy, while others are loud with a spectrum of personalities in between. Several students are raised by single parents and grandparents. We are a Title I school with a free lunch and breakfast program for all our kiddos. They live for field trips, experiments, and scavenger hunts. They don’t know all of what they like yet, but still are open to find out.

My Project

Having a group of people from different cultures in a room is just the first step to embracing diversity. The second is knowing something about who you are sharing your space with. This project embraces that idea. We are asking for books that reflect the cultures of our students and our community. Our list of requested books also addresses different backgrounds and more diverse roles for women, immigrants, and minorities. Books like Be Bold! 11 Latinas who Made US History and African American astronaut Leland Melvin's autobiography Chasing Space will close the diversity gap with this new generation of literature.
