Diversity of Life in the 21st Century

My Students

I have an amazing group of second grade students! My students are part of a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program which allows English learners and English proficient students to receive instruction in English and in Mandarin to develop academic proficiency. Like most classrooms, I have a very diverse group of students. Both English learners and English proficient students are mixed in the same classroom to promote bilingualism, biliteracy, and multiculturalism. It challenges my students to become fluent in two languages while being held to the same high academic standards.

My Project

Kids are natural scientists. They're curious, and they like to learn new skills. They're also open to exploring the natural world. That is why learning about the diversity of life in different habitats so important. My students need a well build laptop, such as the Lenovo Yoga, to help them investigate and explore plants and animals and understand how many types of living things live in a place. Most of my students are English Language Learners that come from low income homes and their only access to a computer is at the local library. The Lenovo Yoga will be used to do research, access online resources, stream short videos, and create class presentations. Through your donations, I will be able to provide my students an opportunity to develop a level of technological understanding as they learn about the world around them.

It will enable them to be successful in an ever-changing society that includes 21st century skills like teamwork, collaboration, while developing patience and perseverance through science education.
