Diversity My Bookshelf! Help My Students See THEMSELVES represented.

Help me give my students a diverse selection of chapter books to read at their level. Kids want to see themselves represented in what they're reading. These selections will appeal to many different students in my class.

My Project

I teach at a very diverse school that includes a large population of students from Indian, Asian, and Hispanic backgrounds. While our school's reading curriculum has made major strides in showcasing works for and by people of color, I've noticed none of the stories include characters of Indian or Asian heritage. My students from those cultures are under-represented in our classroom literature.

All of my students deserve representation in children's literature and should enjoy the gift of reading a book about a kid that they can relate to.

I am choosing books that will increase representation in my classroom. Students will recognize themselves in these books, and I know they will be excited to have these new choices when it comes to self-selected reading.
