These books were specifically for the students who HAD NOT chosen to participate in my Advanced Reading Challenge. These were for students either on or below grade level or who did not choose to challenge themselves with our more well-known book challenge. When the books arrived, I explained the were specifically designated for students NOT in the Advanced Reading Challenge, because those students already have a dedicated shelf for their books. This drew excitement from the rest of the room.\r\n\r\nI have seen multiple students, who I had previously wished would read more, pick up these books, read them quickly, record them, and move on to the next. The picture books provide them with a sense of accomplishment as they can be completed more quickly than a chapter book, and students do not lose interest. The reading scores on these books demonstrate that the students consuming them ARE understanding them and ARE growing as readers.
