Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a school in the South Bronx that provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Significant cognitive delays, Emotional disturbances, Sensory impairments, and Multiple disabilities.

Our school population consists of students from grades K -12 across seven school sites.

As we have seen COVID-19 has had a severe negative impact on students’ lives but so has the racial tension in our country today. The recent police brutalities against people of color have left many of us feeling uneasy. Can you imagine what our students are feeling?

My Project

Over 80 % of our school’s population is made up of brown, black, and Latino students. With the recent cases of police brutality against people of color and the current pandemic, our diverse students have been shaken to their core.

Our students see people who look like them being disrespected, dehumanized, and punished and we must combat these issues the best we can and that's by showing our students something better.

Our diversity library will provide a diverse collection of people, ideas, and cultures from which our students can connect to and learn from. All requested books will go towards the creation of such a library and the development of lessons and activities that will focus on transforming differences into celebrations. Each book reflects back a character, setting, and moral that our black, brown, and Latino students can relate to. I requested 3 copies of each title to allow for greater access for teachers and students at any given time. The spirit of our diversity library will teach hope, equality, peace, kindness, and most importantly unity. With this project, we will teach our students and remind others through the power of literature all the good we are and can accomplish.

It is the very essence of human nature to try and seek out others who not only think like us, but look like us. What better way to find that connection than through the power of books. More Black, brown, and Latino books in our libraries will create an opportunity for our students of color to see that their lives are worth more than atrocities being played out in the world today. Please help us create our school's very first diversity library. A library, standing as a mirror that will reflect back to our students a brighter future.
