My 7th and 8th English Language Arts students are respectful and responsible teenagers. Every day my students arrive to my classroom with a respectful spirit and positive heart. Studying English entails more than just scanning through a book and answering questions. My students practice respect in everything they do, since it is the backbone of everyday life just like reading and writing.
In addition to respect, my students are aware of the importance of being responsible not just at home but at school as well.
My students know that responsibility looks like being prompt, being on task, and being aware of the condition of our learning environment. I take pride in being able to instill these lesson in them in hope that they will continue to be respectful and responsible even after they leave the classroom.
The objective of this project is to expose students to literature where the characters, plot, and conflict all represent themes that are relatable to inner city students in the ELA classroom. For many students the only opportunity they have to read for sustained silent reading happens at school. During those short few hours it is critical that students are reading not only to increase vocabulary and retention but for enjoyment as well. The number of books children are exposed to directly increases their chances of making it to graduation.
Research has shown that we teach students of color that their voices and stories don’t matter when we fail to provide literature with relatable characters and themes.
The goal of this project is to provide students with books featuring characters of color, characters from diverse backgrounds, and with themes and plot development for students to make connections.
The books selected for this project proved to be ideal for middle school students and advanced readers as well. These stories are designed to transport students into alternate worlds and expose them new information in hopes to increase their literacy diet and create a positive attitude toward reading.
