My Students

Students in the "highest poverty" category, often do not have opportunities to follow their dreams. I am all about making the impossible possible and their dreams for the future an obtainable reality. My students come from countries around the world. They have traveled from Africa, Asia, South America, and across North America, as children of refugees and families that move frequently, due to low-income earning ability. The unique and difficult experiences of my students are what make my students some of the most powerful and determined young minds you could ever hope to meet.

My students have experienced adversity.

In our classroom, we rise above it. My students are resilient and brilliant. They have incredible leadership abilities. They help each other and understand the power of teamwork. We build a classroom community and care for each other. When one student succeeds, they all celebrate the success achieved by their classmate. These bonds are forged with time, shared tribulation, and the universal truth that every single student in our class has enormous potential.

My Project

The Dot is a small book that can have a large impact. Written by Peter H. Reynolds, the author tells us "The Dot is about getting started — getting unstuck. It is also about creative teaching, exploring an idea in many ways, and sharing our gifts with others.” This book, and the ideas instilled in it, are the inspiration for this art centered #iseeme STEAM based project. At the end of the year students will get to keep The Dot which will be reread and discussed weekly.

I am super excited to teach art this year as we do not have an art teacher; I feel art should become an integral part of my students everyday exploration of education in the general education classroom - enter the DREAM Centers!

The dream I am dreaming up is a series of inspirational STEAM centers that my first grade students can use every day - engineering, conversation skills, teamwork, reading, critical thinking, and artistic representation of their learning are the key elements to these “Daily Reading Engineering Art & Math” Centers. DREAM Centers for short.

I will be writing a series of project requests to build these DREAM centers for our first grade students. This is the first one - called The Dot, A STEAM LEGO Amusement Park Art Adventure. They will each get their own copy of The Dot - to keep!

Combination STEAM - design an amusement park during the steam rotation, and paint it during the art rotation! Students will create, innovate, and work together with DREAM STEAM TEAMmates. They will see themselves as an artist, engineer, designer, and also a kid having fun at the fair! Students will see their own reflection in the 3 sided light table mirror center’s multi-mirrored perspectives!
