Diversity and Social-Emotional Learning using Hand Puppets

Help me give my students a wide range of diverse stories, puppets, and a puppet theatre to engage all learners in social-justice and social-emotional curriculums. Diverse Hands-Puppets will also be used for our community helpers unit for kindergarten.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in Early Trans. Kindergarten/Kindergarten who all have autism. My students are happy, eager to learn, and adventurous students with autism and speech impairments/communication deficits. Online learning has made teaching students with autism quite challenging since the students can’t always communicate verbally. My students are able to answer yes/no questions, point to letters/sounds, comprehend simple storylines, and follow 1-step directions. However, this does require an adult to sit with their child throughout the entire school day via Zoom since they are non-verbal. I'd like to engage my students by using more visuals and movement activities in our distance learning program to help facilitate social-emotional development.

My Project

I intend on using these Puppets to engage students in grade level content standards for TK/K whether this is virtually or in-person. I currently use a set of finger puppets to engage my kiddos and they responded quite well however they are quite small for the students to see while we are on Zoom. These Diverse Hand Puppets (Commuinity Workers/Helpers) Puppet Theater Stage, and Diverse Anti-Bias Stories for our classroom library will help bring my classroom to life in such a fun way that will encourage all students to actively engage in all lessons.

Puppets help to encourage non-verbal students with autism to build confidence in speaking while engaging students in grade level standards (CCSS).

Children who are reluctant to speak or may be more willing to talk to a puppet. Special need students can use the puppets in all subject content, such as English language arts, mathematics, science, history, art, visual performing arts, theater, and physical education. We can sing, count, draw, and act with our hand puppets. I can model with hand puppets during online instruction with the students too. Hand puppets will definitely provide tremulously support for students with special needs in helping to facilitate grade level content while incorporating speaking. My students with non-verbal autism feel a little nervous and sad because they don't get to go to school. Puppets are a great way to engage children in social-emotional and academic development.
