My Students

My students are curious about the world and eager to learn. They are from a culturally diverse urban community. They bring a special blend of linguistic diversity, background knowledge, prior experiences, and culture to our school. We are a Title I school in southeast San Francisco with a student demographic of predominantly colored children. Approximately 82% of our families are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 50% are English Language Learners.

Despite the challenges with the coronavirus pandemic and the current state of unrest with racial injustice, my students have risen to the challenge of distance learning and are thirsty for knowledge.

My Project

Children's books are one of the most powerful tools to engage with young children on important issues. Books open up discussion on big topics such as self-identity, race, and diversity. We live in a diverse world; our children are surrounded by people with different lives, experiences, and cultures. In order for our children to thrive, they need to be taught about people and cultures outside of their family. In addition to teaching kids about diversity, books are a source of mirrors and windows. They are mirrors for children to see themselves reflected in this world so that they can feel a sense of belonging, and windows to see outside of their own lives, to uncover their potential and recognize the humanity of other people.

This project provides books for my students to see themselves in, learn about people from different cultures, recognize injustices, and feel empowered to be an activist for social equity.

The books will be read aloud to students both during online sessions and in our classroom. Following book read-alouds and discussions, the students will work on activist projects to promote social justice. Our children are change agents; together with your support, we will make an impactful difference to our world.
