My Project

Our school serves around 400 students. We have a growing diverse population. We have children from different parts of the world and cultural backgrounds. 12.5% of our students are considered to be a minority (Black or African American, two or more races, Hispanic or Latino, Asian or Pacific Islander).

The current books in our school library do not accurately reflect the diversity of the students in our school.

The diverse books we do have in our collection are outdated, inaccurate, and/or students have difficulty recognizing and relating to the stories and characters.

My goal is to add up to date books that reflect a wide array of ethnicities, cultural or religious backgrounds to our school library. These books will act as windows and mirrors for the students in our school. The books alone can’t break down all barriers that limit marginalized groups in our country, but in our library we can help give students a more diverse view of the world.
