Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are in second grade, but most of them are still learning how to read. I would like to give my students books that have characters who they connect to and feel inspired by.

I want my students to read books that will empower them by respecting and appreciating what makes them different.

I want my students to embrace and also to celebrate the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual. I want to offer to my students books that place positive value on diversity in our classroom and community.

Children need to read and learn about what make them different, in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, education, and national origin. When students recognize these differences, they learn to respect and value each individual irrelevant of their background.

I read to my students every day. It is one of their favorite parts of the day. They sit on the carpet looking at me excited for another story or new information. I want to include titles that teach students about differences, tolerance, and respect. This way, our classroom can be safer, happier and a more productive learning environment.
