Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an energetic and diverse group of first graders who are eager to learn every day. Their diversity refers to their ethnic backgrounds and languages. I have students from various languages, such as Somali, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Amharic, Dari, Pashtu, French, and Greek. Half of my students are ELL (English Language Learners). I teach in the Dual Language program, which consist of teaching content in Spanish and English. I teach on the Spanish side of the program. This means that my students are learning a third or fourth language.

In addition, the school I teach at is considered a Title I school, which means that most of our families come from a low economic background.

Therefore, 90% of our students are in the free and reduce lunch program and resources are not expected to be provided by their families.

The various backgrounds of students bring an amazing blend of culture to the classroom, but there are also challenges in providing them all the tools so they can succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. But I hope that with your help I can continue in supporting their learning. Thank you for your kind donations.

My Project

I will use these books as read-alouds, mentor texts, and to fill our classroom library. Literacy is the foundation to success, and these books will allow students to develop a passion for reading and learning. In a distance learning, I will do read alouds through zoom meetings and hopefully as we go back to the class, I can share them in person with them.

Students need to see themselves reflected in the stories they read and need to read/listen to stories that include their culture and history.

We need to empower our students. Give them a voice and a place in the classroom and the world!
