Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fifth-grade students are amazed at unlimited potential but have limited resources to fully explore their ideas. The students come from low-income homes where for some, they only interact with educational items at school. Our entire school receives free breakfast and lunch.

My students have a genuine love for learning.

They love to come in early and stay late to help and learn. I want to be able to nurture that love before it is lost. Every year I have the pleasure of teaching students of varying abilities, from highly gifted learners to special needs students, but they all bring the same thing to my class: the love of learning and the eagerness to do their best. Being a person with a disability myself, I want to show them that anyone can succeed regardless of their limitations. I want to fulfill my duty and give them every opportunity they deserve.

Because of COVID-19 things have become even more difficult, and teaching a hybrid class brings its own challenges. Technology has become a huge factor in being able to reach all my students. I want to give them every chance to succeed.

My Project

I have slowly built a science and math themed classroom library, however it's not as diversified as it could be. Students need to see and read about someone like them to feel represented. Stan Lee once said that the best part about Spider-Man wearing a full mask is that any kid can imagine themselves under the mask. Spider-Man can be white, black, brown or whatever. Students NEED people who look like them to show what their full potential can be.

A diversified library helps my students to see that we are all alike at our core and we can all be the difference.

It's so important for all students to see themselves in books so that they can dream every dream their heart desires.

Everyone deserves to have a real hero who looks like them, to hold on to, and aspire to.
