Diversifying My Classroom Library

Help me give my students a library that reflects their backgrounds and their interests. Traditional books tend to feature similar characters, with interests and traits that are not relatable to the kids in my classroom.

My Students

I am fortunate to teach an energetic 9th grade English class made up of creative learners, strong collaborators, and students who work to make a positive classroom environment. My students are diverse in their backgrounds, personalities, and interests, but come together to create a unique learning experience for themselves and myself.

My class is lucky enough to include students with distinctive learning backgrounds, extra-curricular interests, and students from more than seventeen different countries, all of whom bring so much to the classroom and make my job so special.

Having so many unique voices in the room creates an organized chaos that inspires all types of learning and teaching opportunities.

I am currently in my fourth year in education, and each year my students give me 180 more reasons to continue to work harder, learn more strategies, and reflect on my practice. Although there are no boring days, every day with my students reminds me how much I love this job, and how lucky I truly am.

My Project

Due to funding, many of the books in my classroom are several years old, and often feature characters and storylines that are not relatable to the students who sit in front of me. With classes filled with students that are diverse, this means that they are not able to read books with characters who look, feel, and have communities that they can connect to.

By adding these novels, I will be able to expand my library so that my students can read stories by authors who they connect with, with main characters who represent them.

This creates a more engaging learning environment, where students can make authentic and meaningful connections, and inspire their own interest in reading.
