I teach middle school ELA in a small, rural community. When I began teaching here this school year, our classroom had a very small collection of books. I am working to expand our classroom collection so that my students have more varied genre options and opportunities to expand their thinking by including diverse authors and subject matter.
My students will benefit greatly from this diversification Our student population is around 97% white, so we see very little diversity in terms of race, ethnicity, and culture.
A library full of books from various genres, written by authors from heterogeneous backgrounds and experiences, will open up new worlds for many students while affirming others.
Books are like windows and mirrors for students! They can lead to positive social emotional growth by sharing new perspectives with students and fostering opportunities for personal development. I have curated a collection of books for this DonorChoose Project that I know will empower my middle-schoolers by encouraging empathy and perspective-taking.
I am planning to introduce many of these books by utilizing the First Chapter Friday method, where I will read aloud the first chapter of a new book each Friday to give the students an idea of the genre, writing style, and subject matter. Hopefully, this will pique student interest and encourage the reading of diversified materials. Thank you for your consideration of this project!
