Diversify Our Classroom Library

Help me give my students books for our classroom that not only reflect the students in their pages but also educate us all on how to be an ally and to celebrate our unique cultures, histories, and selves.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Cellana's classroom raised $781

My Students

My students are creative, fun-loving and excitable kids. They come from low-income households and have not had much experience with the world outside their small community.

In light of the recent events happening across our country, I am committed to explicitly teaching my students going forward about racism, prejudices, biases, stereotypes and how to be an ally.

My Project

My classroom consists of wonderfully unique students of all different races, cultures, and personal histories. Growing up I was always able to read books and see myself in the characters.

I strive to build a classroom library that is reflective of my students and that will educate my scholars about the histories of their races and prominent figures who have helped civil rights become what they are today.

When the new school year begins I will be using the books from this project to support my "Anti-Bias Building Blocks" Curriculum. Utilizing these books as read alouds will not only perfectly compliment this curriculum but will also provide an opportunity for students to learn about their racial/cultural history and even how to become a young activist. When read aloud, whether it be in person or via Zoom, these books will promote each student's unique character traits and will also teach about racism, stereotypes, how to overcome those mountain tops, and how to be an ally to anyone. These books will enable me to boost students’ racial awareness whether we are learning from home or learning together in the classroom. Having literature that is reflective of themselves will boost students engagement and make our content more realistic to students’ everyday loves.
