Diversify My Classroom Library

Help me give my students diverse books, like mirrors, to reflect the power in reading a story about someone like you. Books also allow us to understand lives and experiences from our own.

My Students

My students are hands-on learners who have unique learning styles. Our class is full of diverse, neurotypical learners. Our classroom community deserves the opportunity to learn how to notice everyone, be friendly to everyone, include everyone, make space for everyone, empathize with everyone and cheer on everyone. Our vision is grand and students deserve a classroom experience that supports seeing the world of learning outside the four walls of the school building. Students need a classroom library that matches that vision and their personalities! This group of students have yet to develop a love of reading and books. They need access to books that open their eyes to the larger world around them and learn that books are windows into the world, as well as mirrors into our souls.

Student engagement increases when students are provided with an uncommon experience.

My students are curious and need help to develop a relationship with books. Our classroom is an open learning environment where they are able to make choices about how they advance their skills and develop the confidence to use their voice to change the world. A diverse classroom library will support this vision for their future.

My Project

Having books with a variety of different backgrounds is crucial in the social and emotional development of students. In fourth grade, students are beginning to pick up books that have more content and stronger meaning. It is my goal to make sure that every student can find something that they can feel relates to them within my classroom library. Books, like mirrors, help reflect what we observe and know about the world we live in. It's powerful to read or listen to a story about someone like you. Books also allow us to view and understand lives that are different from our own, like a window into other experiences. Students who are also not familiar with a culture outside themselves are now at an age where they are learning more about their classmates, further than the surface level of "you look different than me" but we are learning more about the *why*. Let's make sure students have books that reflect their own identities, experiences and motivations, as well as, insight into the identities, experiences and motivations of others.
