My Students
I work with students aged 4-14 and many of my students are students with hearing loss. Some use hearing aides or cochlear implants to help hear, and some use American Sign Language (ASL) for communication.
Many of my students who use ASL do not have access to language at home, due to parents not learning ASL.
These students do not have exposure to many stories/literacy activities and their reading levels are significantly delayed. I would love to introduce more stories so that my students have access to new characters, settings, plots, and dialogues. Many of these books are written by authors with diverse cultural backgrounds, and it is important for my students to see characters of diverse backgrounds.
My Project
The goal and overall hope of these projects is to increase a love of books and story telling for my students. I want them to enjoy books, even if they are not strong readers. Visually engaging books are especially important for my visual learners.
Books are such a good way to explore diverse topics.
My students will benefit from having the stories read or signed to them, since many do not have these experiences at home. They can learn about different cultures, characters, and settings they have not learned about before. Books can help my students learn about other perspectives and problem-solving. Books can help my students make predictions.
