This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day, I have the opportunity to go into a classroom of bright, curious, loving first graders. They learn alongside each other, encourage each other, and help each other grow. They try hard things to stretch their brains, and they ALWAYS try their best. My students also face some challenges. Most of my students are in the process of learning English (~75%) and many (40% of the school) are on free or reduced-price lunch. Some face the instability of homelessness. They also know they deserve the best education they can get!
The future of the country is in my classroom today!
They are diverse, not just in race, language, and culture, but in talents, interests, learning styles, academic and emotional needs, and personalities. They need the tools that will allow their diverse needs at school.
My Project
As a teacher of diverse learners, my main focus is to create differentiated instruction that meets the needs of all my students--I don't think this should stop at instruction! Some students are very successful in traditional seating, but some students are more successful when they have the option of moving, standing, or laying down while they work. Six year olds have a lot of energy and a lot of wiggles. A first grade classroom should have seating that has this in mind.
Students should have many options for seating so that they can find their "smart spot" and have more choice and voice in their learning.
Options such as cushion seats at a low table, stools or bouncy yoga balls at desks, wobble cushions, and desks with exercise bands for students to bounce their feet on will allow students to do what they need to do, which is focus on the task at hand. Bouncy, wobbly seat options and exercise bands will help students who have excess energy that they need to get rid of in order to focus on their work and stay engaged. Furthermore, being in control of their "smart spots" and choices in seating will give them more ownership of their learning environment. As they get older, they will need to be aware of how they learn best, and first grade is a great time to start learning how to make these choices.
Because we will be getting rid of most desks and allowing students to move from spot to spot, we will need a book bin for each student to store his or her supplies.
Flexible seating will make our classroom a space that is sensitive to the needs of all learners and improve their engagement in day-to-day activities and lessons.
