This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students I work with come from all different walks of life. The majority of my students are learning to speak English. Many of them are the only English speakers in their households. My students are behind academically, but show so much potential.
The best part about my students is their sense of curiosity.
I
often find myself shocked with the amount of things my students see and deal with on a daily basis. However, when they are at school, they truly want to know about everything. They are inquisitive, refreshing, and creative. All my students truly want to learn and do well, they just need intentional opportunities.
My Project
The students in my room LOVE to read. However, they are not often given the opportunity to read stories where the main character resembles them. I think it is important for our black and brown students to be exposed to literature where the protagonist is black and NOT a basketball player or football player.
This project is filled with literature that features people of different races and backgrounds.
I am a firm believer that the literature our children are exposed to help shape the way they see and interpret the world. Through this Donors Choose grant, I hope to help the children see the world as it is, through the Time for Kids Magazines, and to open the children's eyes to what it can be.
