My Students
This is not my classroom. This classroom belongs to me and my students. It is our classroom. We are in an urban school located in central Virginia with a high poverty rate. My students are demographically very diverse. Our school is open year-round which allows for less summer slump, more opportunities for remediation, and students retain more information.
Our classroom library needs more diverse books!
Books with diverse race. Books with diverse genders. Books with diverse families. Books with diverse personalities.
My Project
Our classroom is situated in a school that has high diversity. We are multi-racial. We have many kids of families. Like most schools, we have many different personalities in our students. Multiculturalism teaches people to acknowledge, respect, and embrace differences which in turn promotes peace.
Reading diverse books in the classroom allows the children to imagine themselves in different situations.
When they see how other children around the world go to school, they can see the similarities and differences. This promotes respect and empathy for all types of people. This also lets children see their culture in the book being celebrated.
