Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All of the students who will benefit from this project participate in a therapeutic, self-contained, special education program. Our students receive services due to social, emotional, and behavioral issues. These students are all identified as high risk due to their ongoing history of disengagement from school based on trauma, truancy, academic barriers, and behavioral needs.

The students in the program struggle with their motivation and engagement in school due to a history of academic and behavioral difficulties.

These students need more learning materials that are representative of their stories and experiences. The books in this project will give all of our students more literature options for independent reading and classroom units and discussions.

Our students have been identified as high risk in terms of graduation rates, access to and success within post-secondary education and/or training programs, and high rates of incarceration. They have often expressed frustration over not being represented in the curriculum and are more engaged when they feel a personal connection to the curriculum content.

My Project

I have selected a large variety of books in this project to give my students more diverse options to choose from. All of the students in our school represent minority populations. They often struggle to find literature options that are representative of their experiences growing up. This project will assist me in building up a classroom library with many reading choices for learners of various reading abilities and interest levels.

The students at our school have shown that when a book is meaningful to them and they can establish a personal or emotional connection with the characters they are more motivated to engage with the story.

It has been my practice to expose my students not only to stories written about young people of color but to also introduce them to black and Latino authors who are similar in story and life experience to themselves. I have had great success in increasing my students' engagement through literature and curriculum materials that they can connect with on many levels.
